The Church of England is part of the Anglican Communion, which is an international association of churches. There is an ongoing controversy within the Anglican Communion on the subject of gay ordination, which has led to the publication of the Anglican Covenant. According to the CofE newspaper The Church Times the purpose of the Covenant is “to define the relationship between the provinces of the Anglican Communion, holding them to mutual accountability and consensus”.

Many of Britain’s church leaders are hostile to nationalism and to the British National Party. In some cases this hostility extends to barring BNP members from membership of the church in question, while in other cases it is more subtle. The Church of England is very hostile to the British National Party, as are the Methodist Church, the Baptist Church, and the United Reformed Church. In other cases the truth is not so clear. I cannot find any mention of the BNP on the websites of the Seventh Day Adventist Church or the Assemblies of God or the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches, but omission does not disprove hostility, and I know that one of these denominations has attacked the BNP in its national magazine.

Britain’s church leaders are no friends of nationalism. Is there one major Christian denomination in the UK which is not hostile to the BNP? My next submission will explain how we should go about tackling this problem, but for the time being I will confine myself to the absurdity of the situation.

A news story you might have missed at the time of the last general election was that a prominent member of the United Kingdom Independence Party was suspended by his party for making supposedly racist remarks online.

A couple of years back I read a Christian magazine. It contained a lot of good stuff, but one of its features was a trifle disturbing. It was the testimony of a young man who as a teenager had developed offensive views. He also joined the British National Party. Eventually he realised that his views were offensive, and left the BNP.

Being a nationalist does have its bleak moments. Physical assault and wrongful arrest are occupational hazards for active members of the British National Party. I have not as yet been either assaulted or arrested, but I have had people yell obscenities at me.
