Out Of Africa

Being awol as I have been - don't ask, not through choice (no, I wasn't in the BR dungeon for crimes against quality writing although perhaps I belong there) - I've ended up watching loads of rubbish on the TV, something I usually avoid.
One thing I noticed - other than that bloody Zion 2012 logo turning up every advert break - is the amount of charity appeals for things to do with Africa.
Without access to clean drinking water this child will die.
Poor little bleary eyed child needs food, donate just £2 a week.
You all know the ones, always showing a child with pleading eyes. Please give generously.
It's been the same routine since Live Aid, or Feed the World, or all the rest of them.
If we look to the Department for International Development, we see we're already paying for food, water, medicine, education, training, jobs creation, and every other damn thing there, via tax.
We're even paying for contraception - which seems to be working out very well considering the astounding population increases in the third world.
Is there anything these people can do for themselves other than making more children at an alarming rate?
And when they make more children, the population increases, what happens? Bingo, we've got more people we supposedly need to feed, get water to, provide medical care for, and all the rest of it.
It's a vicious circle; they obviously can't support the people they have - so every time that begging bowl increases in size. Give give give Westerner, we make more Africans so you can give give give more.
Nature is telling the world something with disaster after disaster and crisis after crisis in those regions - and that something is that the area these people occupy simply cannot sustain the number of people already there.
Yet every action of the West with its idiotic aid efforts serves to ensure that there are even more of these people tomorrow.
We end up supporting more and more people, who make more and more people (not to mention the increasing migration of people from there to here whom we also end up supporting one way or another whilst they replace us in our own land).
We also make the Africans problems there in Africa far worse with our handouts - where is their motivation to change behaviour, to advance (if they can, that Ugandan space programme shows a glimmer of hope), to solve their own problems, if they know the West will always step in?
The West has to be cruel to be kind. We should attend to our own problems, leave Africa to theirs.
Foreign aid and all these charity appeals are an expensive failure both for us and for them - nature and local ingenuity should dictate a population level, not an utterly unsustainable system of ever increasing foreign support.
We doom them to increasing levels of catastrophe, and us to a burden of aid and charity that will never stop growing, if we pretend otherwise.
